Battles with mobs and between players is the main activity in Lineage II.

In Lineage II battles with mobs are real time battles. If you know the specifics of the battle process, you can safely hunt alone.
Mobs dwell in fields and dungeons. By clicking a mob once, you target it. In the upper left part of the screen you’ll see the target window containing the name of the mob and the info about it. By the colour of its name you can understand its level, and the additional info will let you know whether the battle is going to be hard or relatively easy. Click the selected mob once again or use an attacking skill to start the battle. There are aggressive mobs who attack your character once it’s become visible to them, and not aggressive who don’t attack first. However, such not aggressive mobs have so called sociality – they attack a character if it attacks their comrades. You cannot determine whether a mob is aggressive or social by its looks. So you need to be careful when you explore new hunting zones.
– first click at the mob, the mob is targeted.
– second click at the mob, the mob is attacked.

Since Gracia Plus update has been introduced, there are additional restrictions for hunting mobs lvl 78 and higher:
When you’ve found the mobs that match your level and characteristics, attack them, use your weapon and skills. Use Soulshots/Spiritshots to increase damage. Keep an eye on your HP and MP. When your HP level is low, use healing herbs or healing magic.
The battle is over then you kill a mob or when a mob kills you. If the mob dies, your character gets XP, SP and probably some trophies – adena, resources, items. If your character dies in a battle, it loses some XP and may receive a Shilen's Breath debuff. A dead character can be resurrected by other players or it can go to the closest township or village to get resurrected there.

Weapon for short-range attacks | Weapon for long-range attacks |
---|---|
All Weapon except bows and crossbows can be used for short-range attacks. Damage in short-range attacks depends on Phys. Atk., protection in long-range attacks (physical) depends on Phys. Def. Soulshots are used to increase Phys. Atk. | Bows and Crossbows are used for long-range attacks. Each shot from a bow consumes your character’s MP. Bows have low attack speed, make big damage and attack range is impressive. Crossbows have high attack speed, make average damage, and their attack range is the same as for bows. |
Physical skills | Magic skills |
Warrior classes use physical skills. Such skills make damage at a distance which is predefined for every skill. They also require using a certain type of weapon. Soulshots are used to increase Phys. Atk. | Mage classes use magic skills. Magic skills are related to different elements (i.e. have attributes). It means that when you choose a mob to hunt, you need to take into account their magic defence and elemental protection. Each magic skill requires some time to use. If your character is being damaged while making a spell, the process of casting may fail. To increase magic attack (and spellcasting at the same time) SpiritShots and Blessed Spiritshots are used. |
When you hunt mobs, your character gets XP, SP to learn skills, adena, etc.
XP is required to increase your character’s level. When it reaches 100%, your character gets a level-up. When it gets a certain level, your character can learn new skills.
SP means the points required to learn skills. The higher your character’s level is, the more SP it needs to learn skills. You need to choose skills thoughtfully, otherwise you may lack SP for a skill.
Adena is the currency used in the world of Lineage II. One of the ways to get it is hunting mobs. Note that adena falls on the ground and you need to pick it up when a mob is killed. If you don’t pick it up in 10 minutes, it’ll disappear (like all drop from a mob).
By killing mobs you can receive various items. Each mob has their own set of items. A chance to get armor or weapon is very low, in most cases you’ll get resources or herbs.
Death is Lineage II is quite an ordinary thing. If your character dies during hunting, it loses XP. However, it never loses its level. If a PK character (player killer) dies, they can lose the equipped items and the items from their inventory if their PK counter is 4 or above.

During a battle both mobs and characters can use different debuffs causing certain character’s status. For the most part, such effects are temporary, but they can be fatal for your character or even a group of characters.

Seraphim the Unicorn, Elemental Master's servitor, can cancel such debuffs as silence, root, stun, silence and paralysis from the party members. |
Some classes may use the advantages of positional attacks, i.e. attacks from behind or side attacks. Such attacks allow them to cause more damage. They can also use the advantages of Soul Crystals. It’s very useful to have a tank in the group for this purpose. A tank may draw mob’s aggression upon itself, while the rest of the group attacks from sides or from behind.
Tanks always stand face to face with a mob, so, to increase their defense, tanks use shields. When Shield Defense works, tank’s physical defense characteristics is increased by the physical defense characteristics of a shield. Basic shield defense rate is 20%, however, if a mob is within 30 degrees before the character, shield defense rate is increased. Shields are particularly useful when a character is attacked by several mobs at once, it increases the chances for the character and for the party to survive.
